Bocas Town vs Bastimentos: Where Should You Stay?

Updated Oktober 2026

Aerial view of Bocas Town on Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro

Bocas Town has a measured median of $84 a night; on Isla Bastimentos, Old Bank runs $55, Red Frog Beach $251 and the rest of the island $277. Bocas Town is the practical base with no boat required at night; Bastimentos buys beaches and quiet at the cost of water-taxi rides — and our four stays are in Bocas Town.

The decision is not which island is better. It is whether you want walkable dinners and tours, or beach time and a quieter base — and whether you are willing to plan around the last boat.

1.Price by area, measured

Area medians come from the same Agoda snapshot as the rest of our price guides: 119 stays, 181 nights, collected 18 October 2026, before taxes and fees. Old Bank is on Isla Bastimentos; Solarte is a different island, so it is not included in the Bastimentos rows.

AreaMedian nightStays measuredBest for
Bocas Town$8447First trip, dining, tours, airport
Old Bank$5511Quiet local base, good food
Red Frog Beach$2514Beach resort and villas
Bastimentos (rest of island)$2772Jungle and seclusion

2.Getting between them

Water taxis connect Bocas Town with the Bastimentos docks. Expect $2–$8 one way and 15–20 minutes, depending on the route: the shared Old Bank run is at the low end, and Red Frog is at the higher end. Plan your last ride before about 6pm; after that, boats are scarce.

For a couple based at Red Frog, return boat rides to town for dinner cost roughly $10–$30 a day at those fares — an estimate, not a quote. The shared Old Bank route is cheaper, but you still need to reach the dock.

Bocas Town is not on a beach. It is the hub for the ATM, hospital, airport, nightlife, dining and most tour departures.

3.Choose Bocas Town if…

Choose Bocas Town if this is your first trip, you want restaurants and nightlife, most of your tours leave from town, you want the airport and ATM nearby, and you do not want to depend on a boat after dark. The median is $84 a night across 47 measured stays.

Our four stays are all in Bocas Town, and these are the categories we would put them in: Blue Marlin is the best over-water stay, Casa Pelicano is best for kitchens and longer stays, Bocasso is best for groups and families, and Boho Pelicano is the best budget boutique.

They are ours; the measured numbers for each are in the table and in the ranked stays guide.

StayBest in town forRating (reviews)Median night
Blue MarlinBest over-water stay in Bocas Town8.8 (50)$154
Casa PelicanoBest for kitchens and longer stays in Bocas Town8.9 (8)$95
BocassoBest for groups and families in Bocas Town8.4 (207)$99
Boho PelicanoBest budget boutique in Bocas Town8.6 (18)$119

4.Choose Bastimentos if…

Choose Bastimentos if beach time is the point. Red Frog Beach is a 10-minute walk from its dock; Wizard Beach is a 30-minute trail, and reports on safety differ, so check locally before you go. Old Bank is quieter and residential, with good food at Sea Monkey and Roots, and the cheapest measured median in this comparison at $55.

The trade-off is logistics: you will take a boat for town dinners, and the last runs are around 6pm. Budget for the rides and plan the day around them.

5.Verdict

Bocas Town is the better base for most first trips: a lower median, no boat required at night, and our four stays are there. Bastimentos is the better base for a beach-first trip. On price, logistics and first-trip ease, Bocas Town wins; on beaches and seclusion, Bastimentos wins.

6.How we compared

Area medians and stay counts come from the same Agoda snapshot: 119 stays and 181 nights, collected 18 October 2026, before taxes and fees. We compare area medians, not the cheapest one-off rate.

Water-taxi fares and timings come from the local guides linked below. Fares vary by route and whether the boat is shared; treat them as a planning range, not a fixed price.

There is no single better island. Bocas Town is the easier base; Bastimentos is the better beach base. Pick the trade-off you will actually use.
